What I remember about jigar is he was my one of most obedient residents at IKDRC.I use to hear him during grand rounds and he looks always prepared for whatever subject he was given for presentation. He loves to prepare according to requirements of subject and I think that is the most impressing thing about him and he has done same with this book. There are rarely any book available for technicians to read so that they can be practically sound for day to day practice of dialysis. This book will really be helpful to them for their study and they can use it as reference book. My best wishes will be always there with him.

This is a greatly needed book at present in our country. Our country is facing an epidemic of chronic kidney disease in our country especially due to non communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Maintenance hemodialysis therapy is rapidly expanding due to the initiative taken by Government of India establishing several dialysis centers even at all district hospital levels. This has led to the large need of trained hemodialysis technicians. There is a dearth of literature for these technicians. There is not much uniformity in training hemodialysis technician. This deficiency will at least be partially fulfilled by this well written comprehensive text book on Hemodialysis Therapy. I hope all technician courses would adopt this book as the standard textbook for their hemodialysis training course.

The dialysis technologists and dialysis nurses are very important member of “Team Dialysis” for providing quality dialysis.”Dialysis Therapy” authored by Dr. Jigar Shrimali is going to be of great help to dialysis technologists, especially when most of them are not having structural training in our country where exponential growth of Haemodialysis services is taking place. I am sure this book is written in simple language, will help them in delivering quality dialysis to their patients.

Commendable work. This manual for technician and nursing manpower would meet an important need to have a formatted training and course for paramedics in this area. With the national dialysis coming up under National Health Mission, we need more trained manpower.
I congratulate Dr Jigar Shrimali and wish him all the best.

After five and a half decades following the first hemodialysis treatment which was initiated at the Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, India there is a tremendous increase in the utilization of this mode of renal replacement therapy. Hemodialysis represents more than ever an important approach to the therapy of CKD. Today’s clinical practice and research in the field of hemodialysis seem to proceed in parallel. Dr. Jigar Shrimali has taken the effort to compose a “Textbook of Dialysis Therapy” covering diverse aspects of hemodialysis for developing countries. This textbook will represent an important tool for the reader to become familiar with today’s art of hemodialysis. Dr. Shrimali has arranged the chapters in a concise but complete text in an efficient manner. This textbook represents an important source of information for beginners, practicing nephrologists, Intensivists, basic scientists, dialysis nurses and technologists who want to have a true update on the clinical practice in the therapy of hemodialysis. The added attraction of vascular access creation, infection control, dietary advice, drugs and kidney and case discussions make this textbook unique and admirable.

Dialysis, though being practiced in India since sixties, is still restricted to major cities due to lack of facilities and its affordability. Lack of facilities is not only in terms of dialysis unit but also manpower to perform such therapy. Also, there is no uniform curriculum for training of this manpower for dialysis. Most technicians and nurses doing dialysis are either self-trained with time or being guided by the senior staff. There is overall paucity of books/manuals for dialysis personnel’s, and none in India. This book to my knowledge is first such attempt to help dialysis personnelin India to understand the process of dialysis as a whole,so that an effective and safe care can be provided to these patients.
This is second edition of the book, first being a limited edition released in early 2017. The first edition was primarily a compilation of lectures taken by author during various workshops on dialysis. After the success of the first edition, this edition has been brought with addition of eight more chapters, adding photographs from personal collection of the author and making changes as per the feedbacks given by the dialysis personnel after reading first edition.
This book contains chapters from basic anatomy and physiology of the kidney to the complication of the dialysis and adequacy of maintenance haemodialysis. All aspects of haemodialysis have been covered starting from history of dialysis, haemodialysis machine and dialyser, various aspects of water including water treatment, ultrapure water and citrate dialysate. All types of vascular access have been covered ranging from temporary to permanent, their evaluation, maintenance and management of complications.Enough pages have been devoted to infections during dialysis, which is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in thesepatients.Dialysis is specific group of patients like children, infants and pregnancy has also find its place in the book.
In addition to various aspects of haemodialysis, there is an introduction to peritoneal dialysis with an aim to have a bridge to both type of therapy though further details on peritoneal dialysis are not there, probably restricting use of book primarily for haemodialysis purpose. Few other highlights of the book are procedures in nephrology, FAQs and case discussion for covering some more practical aspect of dialysis.
Two prominent features of the book are its easily readable language and simple diagrams for better understanding.

Dialysis both hemo and peritoneal, is likely to see a exponential growth in the coming decade, due to improved economy, governmental and non- governmental support so more people will be able to access and afford chronic maintenance dialysis. Trained technicians and nurses are the key support staff essential for the delivery of quality dialysis. The book by Dr Jigar Shrimali is both appropriate and timely. Its easy to understand language with numerous practical tips will be extremely useful to trainees of dialysis technology and also for beginners in nephrology. Dr Shrimali's wealth of experience in conducting training workshops for technicians is reflected in this work. This book is a must for every training program and dialysis unit for ready reference.
